Yorkshire Dance was launched in 1982, and now runs over 45 sessions and courses each week,
from Bollywood and Ballroom to Breakdance and Ballet. Yorkshire Dance organises regular performances of Contemporary Dance and Performance Art both at the Centre in Leeds and in venues across the Yorkshire region. Yorkshire Dance supports artists and choreographers in numerous ways, and engages with local people through a range of workshops, Summer and Easter schools, Hafla nights and varying youth dance and community events.
Yorkshire Dance is one of nine National Dance Agencies in England. This national status and associated funding has enabled Yorkshire Dance to develop the areas of production and promotion. As a NDA, Yorkshire Dance is a focus for artists to meet, dance, choreograph and make contact with new audiences. An expanding programme of productions, commissions, training events and the touring of new work enables Yorkshire Dance to play an increasing role in the development of dance on a regional and national level.
Mission Statement
Yorkshire Dance believes that 'Every Body Dances'. The organisation exists to broaden the range and diversity of people engaging with high quality dance through participation, production and promotion. Yorkshire Dance aims to achieve this mission by providing participative dance activity both in the Centre and around Yorkshire, supporting professional artists in the region and encouraging audiences to enjoy a diversity of dance styles and forms.
About National Dance Agencies (NDAs)
The network of National Dance Agencies (of which Yorkshire Dance is part) was conceived and established in 1991. Each NDA has a slightly different focus though they are all linked by a list of core activities.
The geographical differences and variety of resources between NDA's mean that a different weighting is given to different parts of each's remit - they are flexible in their delivery and interpretation of their central purpose. In general, it is understood that an NDA will undertake all or some of the following to varying degrees:
- producing
- educating
- training
- supporting
- resourcing
- fundraising
- advocating
